Hero Cop Crawls Across Thin Ice To Help Pup That Fell Through The Ice

On December 15th, Two New Jersey Police Officers, Robert Voorhees and George Peterson along with Specialist Dave VanDoren responded to an urgent call recently.

Nisel, a one-year-old Rottweiler, had fallen through the ice at a pond and could not get out! Nisel had been chasing ducks (something she likes to do on occasion) in her backyard when she fell into the pond. The Hopewell Township NJ Police dispatched the three men and the Pennington Fire Company who quickly worked to pull Nisel out before she drowns – or froze to death. Voorhees tied a rope around his waist and made his way out onto the ice.

Nisel saw the officer coming and headed towards him – Voorhees was able to grab her collar and Peterson, and VanDoren pulled them both to safety! Watch the dramatic 40-second video below! The footage was captured on Peterson’s body camera. Once Nisel was pulled out of the subzero water, she was quickly warmed up. According to reports, Nisel was reunited with her owner, Carolyn Wooley, and has no lasting effects from the cold water!

The NJ.com reported that the Hopewell Township Police Department was honored by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) for their efforts. PETA gave the department their Compassionate Police Department Award and a box of vegan cookies. Colleen O’Brien, PETA Vice President, said that she hopes the courage these men displayed will inspire others to help animals in need. Talk about a wonderful Christmas gift!
