When Elgin, a city located in Texas, dealt with flash floods in the beginning of May, first responders certainly had their hands full.
All across Central Texas, they were gearing up to prepare for the addition storm predictions about to hit. In fact, the Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services responded to an impressive 18 calls related to water rescue within five hours on one particularly exhausting day!
But somewhere in Elgin, firefighter James Daniel Lopez and his team were embroiled in a different sort of rescue. A very young, small puppy had been out for a walk on a Monday evening with his parent when he wandered without looking and found himself tumbling down, into an open storm drain.
Lopez and his team arrived to help as soon as they got the call. The puppy was frightened and confused, unsure of how he’d fallen. Luckily, the right people were there to help! Lopez climbed right into the narrow area and was able to retrieve the puppy, bringing him back out safely.
The puppy thankfully didn’t sustain any injuries, though he will likely be a little nervous around drains for a while! He was then given back to his parent, who was beyond grateful to see that he was alright.
Although the town was very busy with water rescue calls that week, Lopez and his team were glad to help this cute pup and his family. It served as a great pick-me-up and a nice distraction from the chaos whirling around! The puppy is now back home, safe and sound, and won’t be running near any holes anytime soon!
