Hill’s Pet Nutrition Select Dog Food Recalled Due To Excessive Amounts Of Vitamin D

Hill’s Pet Nutrition has sent out a voluntary recall regarding a large number of their dog foods due to dangerously high levels of vitamin D.

Vitamin D toxicity is a serious and potentially fatal health issue for animals, and pups are included. It can cause lifelong damage, even in best case scenarios, states the US Food and Drug Administration.

Hill’s Pet Nutrition became aware of the elevated levels of vitamin D in a selection of their food products after receiving reports of a pup who ate their food and developed worrying toxicity symptoms. The following investigation conducted by the company revealed that their supplies had made an error that led to the use of contaminated ingredients in their pet foods.

In order to combat this, the company has required that their suppliers’ products pass more vigorous and frequent quality checks before sending their manufactured products to them. This was revealed in a statement issued by Hill’s Pet Nutrition.

You can view a comprehensive list of the affected products on the website of the FDA, here. Do note that this recall is only for foods sold and distributed in the United States. If your pup has eaten any of these foods, please be on the lookout for signs and symptoms of vitamin D toxicity. These will include:

  • Vomiting
  • Blood in vomit
  • Higher thirst levels
  • Lower appetite levels
  • Weight loss
  • Abdominal or stomach pain
  • Higher levels of drooling
  • More frequent urination
  • Constipation
  • Blood in waste
  • Exhaustion and lethargy
  • Muscle spasms and tremors
  • Seizures
  • Depression

If your pup exhibits these symptoms, take them to a vet as soon as possible. Vitamin D toxicity is a serious medical emergency and the first 72 hours are extremely crucial in preventing fatalities.

Unopened Hill’s Pet Nutrition products affected by the recall can be returned to the retailers from which you made the purchase. Inquiries can be made to the company at 1-800-445-5777 or contactus@hillspet.com.
