For most of us, it’s recommended to drink around 2.7 to 3.7 liters a day depending on our gender, and is a widely known fact when it comes to staying healthy. In terms of our dogs and cats, what is their perfect amount of water that they need to drink in order to stay healthy?
Many dog parents don’t know this magic number, and it will all depend on breed, age, and gender.
In warmer weather seeing your dogs drink loads of water after being outside or taking a walk is a good thing. Dogs are similar to people and are made up of 80% of water, which means that they must almost drink as much as humans do. For us as well, drinking water keeps our organs functioning properly and allows us to stay away from dehydration.
This is the same for our dogs. Some studies have shown a simple calculator that dog parents can do in order to find out the perfect amount of water their dogs should be drinking. This formula averages out one ounce per pound of your dog’s body weight is the correct amount of water that should be consumed daily. For example, if your dog is 50 pounds, it’s recommended that your dog will require around 50 ounces of water a day, which is a little shy of half a gallon.
Of course, this calculator will depend on the activity levels, size, and sometimes weather, but in general this calculator will work. For further information about the amount of water your dog needs, speaking to a trusted veterinarian is always beneficial.
