Blizzards and winter storms are brutal and can leave you stuck at home for weeks. Here’s how to keep your dog safe when they happen.
Preparing For A Storm
- Winter storms often cause closed roads, power outages, and more issues that can basically mean you’re stuck at home for a while.
- Make sure you have supplies of water, batteries, candles, blankets, and non-perishable foods. If you have a fireplace, make sure you have enough stuff to get a fire going!
- Even though their fur coats are lush, dogs can still suffer unintended consequences from the cold.
Waiting Out A Storm
- While you wait for the storm to be over, there are a few things you should know. Most importantly, even if your dog loves the snow, don’t leave them outdoors. Storms are different from a little bit of snowfall, and they can be dangerous.
- If possible, keep your dog in the same room as the warmest heat source inside your house. Make sure they aren’t getting uncharacteristically sleepy by making sure they have toys, and don’t stop letting them be active.
- When you bring your dog outside to use the bathroom, make sure you keep them leashed, not letting them out of your sight. Giving them booties and a coat to wear can help further protect them.
Aftermath
- Even after a storm passes, the aftereffects may stick around for days, if not weeks.
- Ice and snow forms slippery walks, power lines may take time to be fixed, snow may threaten to tumble off roofs, and debris may be hidden around.
- Keep your dog in a controlled area, even when they’re playing in snow.
