If Your Dogs Are Afraid Of Children Here's What You Can Do About It

Children and dogs do not always go well together. Some dogs just don’t like kids. Some dogs are even afraid of children!

A dog that was raised around children will generally be accustomed to the child’s movements and sounds. But bringing a dog that has had little exposure to children can be frightening. A crying child may cause your dog to feel threatened or nervous. Here are some things to keep in mind when dealing with dogs and children. Dogs will communicate how they feel with their bodies and certain sounds.

To a dog, a human child is very different from an adult. The voice of a child is a higher pitch and children make more random movements than adults. Bottom line – children are less predictable. An unsteady child may fall and hurt a dog in some way, not on purpose, but does the dog know that? Dogs use the body language of those around them to determine how things are going in the house. A child can send out mixed signals, and that causes confusion. If a dog grew up with children, they would probably be more secure around children.

If not, you can still help your dog by having them sit and be calm when children are around. Then you can reward them for being good! That way children become something positive in the eyes of your dog. You can tell if your dog is uncomfortable if they avoid eye contact, walk away, or look away. Do not ignore these signs, it could make things worse!
