Mouheb Ashakih, a 58-year-old woman of Sandusky, Ohio was charged with felony cruelty to animals after allegedly leaving her dog in a hot car as punishment for attacking other pets.
On Saturday, August 7, the police received a call from a concerned neighbor stating that he saw the accused put her pit bull in her car, after which she locked the doors and put the windows up. At that point, the dog had been in the car for roughly 20 minutes where temperatures exceeded 81℉. Inside, the dog had been tearing up the vehicle in a desperate attempt to get out. He went to the residence to speak to the accused, pleading with her to let the dog out. She replied, ‘I don’t care. I want him to die.’
When the police interviewed Ashakih, she reportedly told the officers that she had put her dog Chapo in the backseat of the vehicle as he had attacked one of her four dogs. By the time the officers got to the vehicle, the dog appeared “passed out or deceased”. Ashakih saw this and begged the officers to break the car window.
When Chapo was pulled from the car, he was stiff and hot to the touch. His paws were cut and bleeding which covered the car in blood. He fought for his life but eventually succumbed to the heat.
After a number of concerning statements made to the officers, Ashakih was subjected to a mental evaluation. The Erie County Dog Warden ordered the removal of her four remaining dogs from the residence. She will return to court on Monday to face the charge.
