Dogs burp now and then. Usually, it is a harmless bodily function that you need not worry about. However, it could signal that all is not well in certain cases.

Burping signals the escape of air from the esophagus. Burps occur when there is too much air in a dog’s stomach. Usually, a dog may burp while eating and drinking too quickly. Another reason a dog may burp is due to a change in diet. Also, consuming “human” food may be a culprit.

While burping doesn’t always call for concern, excessive burping could be a sign of bloat in some cases. In an interview with Petful, Veterinarian Marie Haynes said excessive burping could be a reaction to food allergy. However, if you notice the burping occurs after drinking water, it is likely not the case.

Excessive burping could be a sign of digestive disorders, such as Gastrointestinal disease, Excessive bacteria fermentation, Aerophagia, and Acid reflux. It is usually best to consult your veterinarian once you notice your dog burping too frequently.

While you shouldn’t think the worst when your dog belches once or twice, it is always a good thing to keep a close eye and take note of their activities, that way, if their burping behavior suddenly becomes usual, you can contact your veterinarian soon enough to get their medical opinion.
