If you enjoy eating cabbage, you may wonder whether your dog can join you in eating it. Dr. Claudine Sievert, a veterinarian at Stayyy, and Dr. Sara Ochoa, a veterinary consultant with DogLab, have provided helpful insight into how safe cabbage is for dogs.
According to the vets, it is safe and healthy for dogs to eat cabbage because it has dog-friendly nutrients. However, there’s a small caveat: “if your dog overeats cabbage, it can cause them to have an upset stomach, gas, and diarrhea,” Dr. Sievert warns.
According to Dr. Sievert, your dog can only have an upset stomach and diarrhea if they eat a lot of raw cabbage over multiple days.
Your dog can safely consume any cabbage and enjoy different health benefits from eating the vegetable. There are several vitamins in cabbage, including vitamins K, C, B6, and B1. It is also rich in fiber, manganese, copper, and potassium.
While it is safe for your dog to eat raw cabbage, it is best to serve them cooked cabbage instead. “This will help make it easier for your dog to chew and digest the cabbage. When cooking the cabbage, make sure that you do not use any spices.” Dr. Ochoa said.
Despite its numerous nutritional values, cabbage should only supplement your dog’s diet and not replace meat in their diets. Be sure to cut them into small pieces so your dog won’t have difficulty eating them.
