Before you go sneaking your dog a bite of your hot dog or burger, you might want to think twice about certain condiments. In this post, we’re talking about mustard. It’s great for us, but is mustard safe for dogs? You’ll just have to keep reading to find out.
Mustard and dogs
Mustard seeds are toxic for dogs and should not be given to them under any condition. This can lead to gastroenteritis which leads to the stomach and intestine becoming inflamed. Mustard is especially dangerous for small dogs. Large dogs can probably get away with sneaking a lick or two from your plate, however, it is advised to keep it away from all dogs. You may not have a problem with mustard greens since they don’t contain seeds.
Symptoms of mustard toxicity
After your dog eats mustard, you can expect symptoms within 30 to 45 minutes after consumption. These include:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
- Abdominal pain and discomfort
You may treat it at home by giving your dog fluids such as water or anti-diarrhea meds. You may also induce vomiting. In more serious cases, contact your vet right away for more advice on supportive and emergency care.
As a dog parent, it is your responsibility to keep your dog safe even when you aren’t around. This includes ensuring your bin is doggy proof so that he/she cannot go rummaging and stumble across mustard. You should also ensure such condiments are out of reach.
