Cold weather can be dangerous to dogs in extreme temperatures. But how can you tell if your dog is too cold? Here are 8 telltale signs.
Slow Movements
A cold dog may begin walking slowly outdoors if they don’t want to be in the cold. They may even hide behind objects to “hide” from the temperature.
Limping
Dog’s paws are often very sensitive, so cold weather can hurt their paws and make them limp. Make sure your dog has booties or socks on if they’re outside in the cold.
Lethargy or Drowsiness
This is an extremely serious symptom that, in cold weather, can be a sign of hypothermia. If you see that this is the case, bring your dog indoors and contact a vet immediately.
Shivering
This is a fairly standard reaction to too-cold temperatures.
Curling Up
In order to keep themselves warm, a dog may curl up to use their own body heat to keep themselves from getting too cold.
Cold Ears
Dogs still often feel warm when they’re trembling in the cold. But if you touch their ears, they will give away their real temperature.
Whining
A dog who trusts you will try to tell you when they are in discomfort. A dog who is out in the cold may try to tell you when the temperature is too extreme for them.
Weather
The simplest way to tell if it’ll be too cold for your dog? Look outside. If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them.
