Losing a dog is comparable to losing a human child. When this North Carolina family lost their blind dog named Juice over two years ago, it felt like the sky had fallen ten times over.
Of course, this Charlotte family didn’t expect to ever see him again, but miracles do happen and Juice is living proof.
It wasn’t all luck since they have the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Animal Care and Control and Juice’s microchip to thank for it. Juice was picked up by senior officer Kathleen Caffrey whose quick thinking scanned the chip and found that the dog’s family was roughly three miles from the location. She called the number associated with the serial number on the microchip and got no answer. It was then that she decided to visit the home.
By this time, 10-year-old Juice was missing for two years. The call the officer received was for a stray, but it was quickly discovered that he had a family.
When she showed up at the house and asked if the family had a missing dog, they said no at first because they had lost hope. Then, she asked about Juice and it clicked. They were left speechless but quickly became excited at the thought of the reunion.
No one had thought they would ever see Juice again, so the reunion was all the more special. According to Caffrey, this happens more than we think and it’s a very fulfilling job to finally reunite long-lost dogs with their families.
