A Marine veteran but the name of Alexandra Melnick has just lived through a nightmare every dog lover will understand. Melnick’s German Shepherd service dog went missing from her backyard in Vista, California the day after Thanksgiving of 2014. She originally got Kai the GSD to help with her PTSD after her time serving in Afghanistan, so after he went missing, Alexandra was heartbroken. After searching for almost 10 months, traveling many, many miles, taking their story to local media, and setting up a page on Facebook (which proved fruitful, because that was where she reportedly got the tip as to Kai’s whereabouts), Kai the GSD is finally back home with his mom, Alexandra.
Alexandra still isn’t quite sure who exactly took Kai so far away, but their story is a great example of what you should do if your fur kid ever goes missing. After getting all the media attention, Kai’s dognappers may have dumped him. He then ended up with a Texas family who police believe were not aware he was stolen, but didn’t want to give him up so Kai’s mom obtained police assistance who had animal control seize the dog for her, after they scanned the microchip and saw this was in fact, Kai.
When they were finally reunited, Kai recognized her right away. Alexandra was overjoyed to have him back and safe. However, he had developed a host of health issues ranging from a skin infection to fleas and open sores and now had several scars across his body and nose which seem to indicate he was struck by someone using “negative reinforcement.”

While Melnick was understandably upset to see her beloved fluff ball had suffered such neglect and mistreatment, she is so glad to have him back home and safe with her. She is gently nursing him back to health and spending lots of quality time with him. She still can’t believe he’s finally back home!

You will also be glad to know at a property hearing in Texas on Wednesday morning, a judge determined Alexandra Melnick to be the owner of the dog, Denton County Constable Doug Boydston. The state of Texas has several laws in place for situations like this, which ensure Melnick will not have any legal issues with reclaiming her fur kid in the future. He is hers for good!
