Statistics on cruelty to animals are alarming; one animal is abused every minute and 65% of all abused animals are dogs. There are almost 6000 documented cases of dog abuse that occur every year, which range from physical abuse to neglect; this story is focusing on the latter.
Neglect is an insidious form of abuse that often leads up to life-threatening conditions for dogs. The case in point is a boxer dog who was found in a dumpster within an inch of his life.
Found in the foul depths of a blue dumpster was little Bowie, a wide-eyed pup who was effectively thrown away. Stuck in a wire cage, his finders figured that getting him out wasn’t going to be easy, so they called for professional help. Once the Wichita Animal Action League arrived, they managed to free Bowie from the cage and got him out of the dumpster.
Sarah Coffman, the Action League’s founder, knew from the moment she saw Bowie that he was a loving dog. In their first interaction, the little pup, appearing thin and starved, climbed up in Coffman’s lap and gave her a cuddle. Soon after, Bowie was taken to a veterinarian who advised that he needed extra care to mitigate the trauma he had been through.
Under 24-hour care, Bowie gradually got better, putting on a healthy weight and keeping his positive spirit, which meant that he was ready for a new family. Having developed such a close bond with him, Coffman was hesitant to give Bowie to a foster home. However, she knew that there were other dogs in his situation that she could help.
Upon parting with him, she looked at the welcome sign of his new home and knew that he was going to be fine. Months later authorities found Bowie’s previous owner and charged him with misdemeanor animal cruelty for which he had to do two years’ probation and pay restitution to the Wichita Animal Action League. Now as Bowie enjoys his new life, justice also prevailed.
