Bully the bulldog is a much-loved mascot for the Mississippi State college football team. During a Saturday game, a small accident occurred – a player from Auburn accidentally hit the dog with a football.
Everyone was worried, and Bully – who is actually the 21st Bully and is really named Jak – was rushed off the field ASAP to get checked for injuries. Luckily, apart from some minor bruising on his hind leg and chin, he was fine.
But PETA – a controversial animal rights group – found out what happened and Marta Holmberg, PETA’s senior director, sent Mississippi State a letter asking for Bully to be retired. They said that the whole live mascot program should come to an end, and they offered to help Jak find a forever loving adoptive home. They also added that the lights, noise, and stress of a stadium are inherently cruel to a dog.
Mississippi State did not directly respond, but Hunter Cloud, the university’s sports editor, stated in an article that Jak is very well cared for, has routine checkups with vets, and doesn’t go to games when the weather is too hot. Plus, Jak already has a forever loving family! Cloud finished his article by telling PETA to back off.
For now, Jak is recovering, but he’ll soon be back on the field!
