The moment Rachel, a Petco manager in Allen Park, Michigan, saw a couple perusing the store with two big dogs in tow, she worried something was wrong. The pups didn’t have collars on, and their leashes were linked together in a slipknot-type loop.
Rachel spoke to them about their dogs, and the couple insisted that they simply forgot the collars and were only there to pick up necessities. They went off to the rear of the store to look at dog food.
Several hours later, at closing time and long after the couple snuck away, employees heard whines from the bathroom. There were the two pups from earlier, frightened and abandoned. Unfortunately, the local rescue didn’t have space for the senior pups, so Rachel wrote on Facebook to ask for help.
P.O.E.T Animal Rescue’s Carol Lair soon saw the post. She knew she had to help, so she went to pick them up the next day. The pups were shaking in fear and refused to leave each other’s side. But once they were in Lair’s car, they began to get curious. One climbed onto her lap and started moving the seat and windows.
Now, these pups, named Daffodil and Marigold, are in a foster home. They’re physically healthy, enjoy pets, and love games of tug-of-war and fetch – but they are also anxious when meeting new people, to the point of shaking in fright. They appear to have been repeatedly used for breeding, too, so they haven’t had an easy life.
Still, the pups do like people – they just need time to warm up. After receiving vaccinations and being spayed, the dogs will be ready for adoption. They would love a home where they will receive lots of attention and won’t be left alone often, with a family willing to work on building their confidence.
Regardless, they’re calm around kids and cats and will likely do well in most homes. And of course, they’re a package deal! If you’re interested in adopting Marigold and Daffodil, you can fill out an adoption application online!
