A minimum of 93 individuals have been infected with salmonella across 27 American states linked to pig ear treats for dogs. This outbreak has resulted in 20 hospitalizations and has led to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launching an investigation into the issue.
The pig ears, sold in blunk by Pet Supplies Plus, were recalled in early June from 400 retail stores across 33 states. Since then, 48 more illnesses stemming from these treats have been reported to the CDC. The contamination was discovered when the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Michigan tested some of the products and found that they contain salmonella.
Both pets who consume the product and humans who handle them can become infected with salmonella. Pets typically develop diarrhea, vomiting, and fever, while humans develop abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, fever, and bloody diarrhea. In certain cases, it can cause more serious conditions and illnesses.
This pig ear problem is just the latest addition is a string of recent recalls and health concerns surrounding many types of dog foods. 16 brands of food have recently been linked to heart disease in dogs, prompting recalls galore across the nation.
If you happen to have purchased Pet Supplies Plus’ bulk pig ears, do not feed them to your pups. Throw them out and, if you or your dog have come into direct contact with them, it’s a good idea to speak to a doctor.
