The most common human food known to be toxic to pups is probably chocolate. But many fur ball parents love chocolate and will have a stash in the house.
The problem is, even if you try your best to keep them out of a reach, an inquisitive pup might still manage to get their paws on some. Here are some things you should know in case your fur ball ingests chocolate. What does ingesting chocolate do? In small doses, it causes vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, hyperactivity, panting, and increased heart rate. In larger doses, it can result in tremors, seizures, coma, and even death. Not good!
But how much chocolate is safe for a pup? Well, it depends on the kind. Chocolate becomes more toxic as it gets darker. You can get a better idea of the toxicity of the chocolate in certain amounts through this calculator. If your fur ball seems to have ingested even close to a dangerous amount, take them to a vet. However, toxicity may vary between breeds, pre-existing health conditions, and individual sensitivity, so don’t hold it as law!
You might be tempted to induce vomiting in your pup when you discover they’ve eaten some chocolate, but this isn’t recommended, as many ways of doing this can be just as dangerous as the chocolate itself! It’s much better to simply head off to a vet and have them do it for you – it’s cheap and safer done by a professional. Have an idea of how much of the sweet food they ate, and what kind, and notify your vet in advance before leaving the house so they can prepare for you.
The good news is that chocolate is rarely fatal when treatment is sought early. Now that you’re informed, you’ll be prepared to handle a situation like this one, and your pup will be just fine. Don’t forget to like and share!
