Michael Atkins from Hickory, North Carolina, has narrated how a new rescue dog he adopted had an uncanny resemblance to his previous family dog. Michael learned about the dog through his neighbor, Kelly, who informed him about a fundraiser for an animal rescue organization she and her partner were starting up.
"She mentioned that she had a dog that had literally been forced on them the previous day at another fundraiser by a man who was really sketchy on details," Michael said.
Kelly didn't know what to do with the dog because she and her partner weren't accepting dogs. However, she piqued Michael's interest when she mentioned that the dog was part Border Collie – a breed for which Michael had a soft spot.
Michael decided to meet the dog, later named Cinder, but was shocked by how much she reminded him of Shadow, their family dog that passed away from cancer two years before. The next day, he invited a co-worker to meet the dog and confirmed that the dog reminded him of Shadow. Michael adopted the dog that day.
When Michael adopted Cinder, she was around 6 months old, and she went on to live for 10 years before succumbing to kidney failure in 2020. Michael was saddened by Cinder's demise but said he prefers to view it as if he was given an extra 10 years with Shadow.
