We know that when dogs love you, they do so unconditionally and deeply. There’s no going back for them if they start to trust and love you.
Experts have stated that dogs adopt you and make you part of their family! Yes, they treat humans like family, and just like any family member, they demonstrate empathy too. Dogs are emotionally intelligent and we all know it. But do dogs have each other’s backs? For example, if they spot another dog wanting help, would they help them?
Experts at the University of Vienna wanted to find out if dogs had each other’s backs and if they would be willing to give something, expecting nothing in return. They called this the prosocial behavior – a more advanced concept of cooperation from dogs. In literal terms, prosocial behavior means doing something good to someone, an act of kindness, expecting nothing in return. Well, you’d be surprised to know that researchers concluded that dogs too exhibit prosocial behavior, even when they know they’ll get nothing in return!
In a study, two dogs were placed next to each other. Some pairs of dogs knew each other, while other pairs were strangers. Each dog was given the opportunity to pull one of the two levers – one lever delivered a tray of food to the other dog and the other lever delivered an empty tray.
Results revealed that most dogs pulled a lever to deliver a tray full of food to dogs they knew, but some weren’t keen on delivering a tray of food to stranger dogs. However, it’s not all that bad people!
Coming up next, we’ll talk about why dogs do this! Meanwhile, how was your day today? Talk to us in the comments! Watch out for Part 2!
