The sea lions along the coast of Oregon are experiencing an outbreak of leptospirosis and health officials are warning people with dogs to be careful!
Leptospirosis is a contagious bacterial disease that can cause kidney failure, damage to the liver, and even death. The outbreak began in late September when an increase in sick and dead sea lions was observed in Tillamook, Clatsop, and Lincoln counties. One researcher from Oregon State University Marie Mammal Institute state that there were eight confirmed cases in Oregon, but that it had spread to California.
The last outbreak in Oregon was back in 2010. Leptospirosis is transmitted by contact with the infected animal’s bodily fluids. So, when the sick sea lions come to shore, family dogs are at risk (and any other animal in the area). Pet parents in the affected areas are being told to keep their dogs at least 50 feet from a sea lion found on shore. No one would allow their dog to come into contact with standing water or puddles since the disease may be there as well.
Symptoms include lethargy, vomiting, and a faster heart rate. If your dog shows any of these signs, you should get them to the vet soon for some antibiotics. The quicker you get the antibiotics in their system, the higher their chance of survival! Please spread the word about this potentially deadly disease to all your friends on the west coast! Knowledge is power!
