Signs, Symptoms And Treatment Of Kidney Infection In Dogs

The kidneys are crucial organs that filter out toxins, move waste products into urine, and maintain electrolyte balance. When these organs are affected, they have difficulty doing their job and can cause toxins to build up within the body.

Both humans and dogs can develop kidney infections, and untreated infections can lead to severe, permanent damage, organ failure, and fatalities.

Causes

Bacterial infections are the main cause behind kidney issues in dogs, typically from E. Coli or staph. From the urethra or bladder, the bacteria make their way up to the higher urinary tract. Birth defects, immune system disorders, and pre-existing conditions can also lead to these infections.

Symptoms

It often takes a while for kidney infection symptoms to show in dogs. Once you see symptoms, the infection is more advanced and requires immediate treatment. Symptoms include:

  • Increased thirst
  • Strong smell from urine
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Fever
  • Dark urine
  • Discolored urine
  • Vomiting
  • Hunching over
  • Weight loss
  • Increased urination
  • Abdominal pain
  • Side pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Decreased appetite
  • Lethargy
  • Depression

Treatment

Treatment varies depending on the cause and severity of the kidney infection. Urine cultures and urinalysis are often conducted. In many cases, an antibiotic is prescribed with pain medication. In more severe infections, surgery may be needed.

Prevention

Give your dog regular distilled water that is fresh and clean. Make sure you let your dog use the bathroom as often as they may need to!
