How to make a girl fall in love with you. Always maintain eye contact when talking to her. That is a tip from the Dating Handbook. As it turns out, it’s also what science recommends if you want to maintain that unbreakable bond with your dog.
Just like us, dogs also need constant reassurance that the love is still strong. Don’t sit there and act like you don’t get grumpy when your partner doesn’t constantly prove their love to you! So, the next time you tell Lola how much she means to you, make sure you are looking into her eyes. She may not feel the weight of the words, but she will definitely see the fire in your eyes. And she will know that they burn for her.
According to a study conducted at Monash University, dogs are more responsive to humans’ social cues when there is an Oxytocin rush in their brains. Oxytocin, also known as the happy or love hormone, is the chemical in our brains that enables mother-baby bonding. Guess one thing that can cause an Oxytocin overload? Yap, staring into their eyes.
So, on top of creating a deeper bond with your pup, staring into their eyes will enable them to follow your social cues better. They will think twice about peeing on the carpet when you give them ‘The Look.’ To prove this claim, researchers took 31 male and 31 female dogs, administered Oxytocin through a nasal spray to one group, and gave a saline placebo to the other group.
The researchers then tested their responsiveness to social cues by pointing to a hidden treat. The dogs with Oxytocin performed significantly better than those without. This research will also come as good news to dog trainers as they can incorporate Oxytocin administration into their training techniques.
