There can be breed characteristics, but each pup is always their own individual! They may prefer to do different things that you wouldn’t expect from their breed – and that’s perfectly normal.
In Summer the Golden Retriever’s case, whether she will give you hugs or not is entirely dependant on her mood!
In a way, she defies stereotypes of Golden Retrievers being highly affectionate – she’s a little more independent than most. But when Mom is holding a treat in her hand, you can be certain this pup will be doing everything in her power to get those yummy snacks. And if getting them means hugging Mom as much as necessary, then so be it!
You can see those hugging skills in action in this video! Just to be clear though, she will give you a hug upon request, even without treats. It just depends on whether she is feeling up to it at the time. The presence of treats just makes it absolutely certain!
