This Blind Dog's Sister Acts As His Personal Guide Dog

Jake has loved spending time with fellow dogs since he was a little puppy. He was especially close to Molly, his big sister. The two Golden retrievers were joined at the hip. But then Molly passed away, leaving Jake sad and alone.

So the Atkinsons, Jake’s Mom and Dad, decided to get Addie, a younger golden retriever, who could help keep him company. Jake loved Addie and taught her tons of things. But then, the play slowly began to stop, and the Atkinsons realized that there was something wrong with Jake’s eyes.

Months of vet visits eventually revealed that Jake’s tear ducts were no longer producing tears. To prevent excessive pain that would require euthanasia, vets recommended that Jake have his eyes removed.

As extreme as it sounded, the Atkinsons knew this could be the only way to help Jake. After doing some research and speaking to other Moms and Dads who had been through the same, they went through with the procedure.

As Jake recovered from the surgery, his sister was constantly by his side. She began to guide him along, teaching him how to go up and down the stairs, reminding him of the layout of the house, and giving him his confidence back.

For their first years, Jake had taught Addie – and now, Addie returns the favor every day!
