Cancer is a disease that is, simply put, caused when cells mutate and reproduce continuously, creating tissue that contributes nothing to the health of the body while diverting all of the body’s resources to itself. In a way, it is a bit like a parasite – and one that nobody wants.
Alas, some pup breeds are more susceptible to cancer than others. The Golden Retriever is infamously one such breed, with cancer being one of the breed’s top health concerns. To combat this, a nationwide study in the United States is collecting data from hundreds of pups to learn how to help.
The Morris Animal Foundation is conducting what’s called the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, which they claim is the most extensive and thorough research ever undertaken in veterinary medicine. It will take years, if not decades before we can take advantage of the information, but hopefully it will help future pups.
