Vets State That If You're Feeling Cold, Your Pups Are Feeling Cold Too

Oh, baby, it is sure cold outside! Did you ever stop to think about your pets when you have a chill?

Did you know that if you are cold, your pet is probably cold too? Here are some tips to help keep your pets safe and warm this winter.

  • Keep the pets inside
  • Watch how long your dog is outside – they should just do their business and come back in.
  • Be sure to wipe their paws off when they come back in and remove the snow from between their toes.
  • Regular grooming is still important in the winter – but try not to give them a bath until spring.
  • If you have an elderly or younger dog, consider getting some pet boots for when they do go outside.
  • Antifreeze is dangerous to pets. Be sure that you keep them away from it – even just a small amount of antifreeze can kill a cat.
  • Feral cats need shelter too. You can erect a shelter for them to survive the winter. It could be as simple as having a storage bin with newspaper, blankets, Styrofoam, or straw inside.

Thankfully, many cities have ordinances that now require all pets to be taken indoors when the temperatures fall to a certain level. Yes, some dogs may be able to withstand cold and wintery temperatures, but that doesn’t mean they are immune to the cold. Frostbite is a very real danger for anyone left out in the cold.
