Is your pup scratching or itching in particular parts of his body a lot?
It’s believed that one in five fur balls suffer from allergies that make them constantly uncomfortable, and the constant scratching can lead to infections. Oh no! So where do these allergies come from, and what types might your pup have? Here are some of them!
1. Flea allergy. This is self-explanatory, and is the most common allergy in pups. Scratching and itching by pups in affected areas may cause hair loss and trauma to their back, legs, and tail.
2. Atopy. Akin to hay fever in humans, this is caused by dust and pollen inhaled by a pup. Oddly enough, this allergy causes pups to lick their feet a lot – but they may also sneeze, have runny or itchy eyes, and experience itchy skin. It starts out as a seasonal allergy, but may eventually turn into a constant infection.
3. Food allergy. Just because you’ve fed your pup the same food for years, doesn’t mean he can’t have developed an allergy. If you suspect your fur ball may have developed one, switch out his food to something he’s never had for 8 to 12 weeks. Talk to your vet about options!
4. Other allergies. These are just the most common ones, but pups may develop other ones. If you suspect your fur ball has one, schedule a visit to your vet. They will be able to diagnose your pup’s condition based on the symptoms they show.
