What Causes Diarrhea In Dogs

It is often frustrating for many dog parents whenever their dog has diarrhea or starts vomiting, especially if they don’t know what caused it or how to help. There are many reasons why your dog might have a sick tummy, and some are more serious than others.

It may be difficult to pinpoint the cause of diarrhea in dogs because it is a symptom of different issues. Some of the most common causes of diarrhea in dogs include:

  • Dietary Indiscretion: When a dog eats something they shouldn’t have, it could upset their stomach.
  • Bacteria: Bacteria, such as E.coli, can cause diarrhea. Dogs who eat raw food diets are more susceptible to encountering this issue.
  • Virus: The most common virus that causes diarrhea is parvovirus. Affected dogs usually have blood in their stools,
  • Allergies: An upset stomach could be a symptom that a dog is allergic to something in their diet.

Other causes of diarrhea in dogs include parasites, cancer, and inflammatory bowel disease.

If your dog has diarrhea without other symptoms, you may treat them at home by offering them bland, easy-to-digest food. Probiotics may help as they contain ingredients that can help firm up your dog’s stools.

If your dog has diarrhea and symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, lethargy, and blood in the stool, please call your veterinarian immediately.
