It is not uncommon for dogs to raid fresh laundry. While some may drag off clothes with their mouths, others may try chewing certain items, such as the dryer sheet.
If your dog eats a dryer sheet, there are plenty of reasons to be worried, the major one being that it contains chemicals. Dryer sheets emit strong scents that make laundry smell nice.
Since dogs explore the world with their nose and mouth, they may find the scents from the dryer sheets enticing and want to chew them, especially if they are hungry or bored.
Unfortunately, dryer sheets can be poisonous when ingested. Dryer sheets contain chemicals and detergents, such as benzalkonium chloride and cetrimonium bromide, that are harmful to dogs.
When ingested, these chemicals can cause havoc to a dog's stomach lining, mucous membranes, etc. Besides the dangers of poisonous chemicals, dryer sheets are made of synthetic materials that dogs can't digest.
While dogs often pass objects they can't digest in their stool, sometimes some objects can get stuck to their guts. If your dog got a hold of your dryer sheets and ate them, you need to determine how much they ate to know the amount of trouble they are in.
Take your dog to your veterinarian and if possible, take the sheets packaging along so it would be easier for your vet to determine the toxic ingredients and provide the necessary treatment.
