What to Do When Your Dog Has Diarrhoea

Diarrhoea is a common issue in dogs and is often a sign that their immune system is working to reset itself. A healthy dog with a strong immune system will usually return to normal within 2-4 days. 

There are many things that can cause diarrhoea in dogs, including stress, dietary changes, and food allergies. If your dog is experiencing other symptoms, such as blood in their stool, black tar-like stool, or vomiting, it is important to contact your veterinarian. You should never give your dog any over-the-counter medications, such as Pepto Bismal, without consulting your veterinarian first, as these can cause harm.

There are a few simple things you can do to help stop your dog's diarrhoea. First, remove food and treats and allow your dog to fast for 12 to 24 hours. This will give their body time to reset itself. It is also important to make sure your dog has plenty of fresh water available, as diarrhoea can cause dehydration.

If your dog's condition improves after about six hours, you can try offering them lukewarm, onion-free, low-sodium chicken or bone broth. This will help rehydrate your dog and ease them back into eating regular meals. If your dog's diarrhoea lasts more than three days, or if you have a puppy with diarrhoea, seek veterinary care immediately. In most cases, however, diarrhoea can be resolved with some care and attention.
