What Vaccines Do Dogs Need?

If you have pets, you know how important vaccination is to ensure your baby’s health. But sometimes it seems like the amount of medicine and procedures your veterinarian recommends is absurdly large. Which of these vaccines does your dog really need?

There are two types of vaccines: core vaccines, which are necessary for any dog, and non-core vaccines, which are only needed in certain cases. According to the American Animal Hospital Association, the core vaccines are the ones that protect dogs against rabies, parvovirus, distemper, and adenovirus 2. The rabies vaccine is the most important and is often required by law.

Non-core vaccines prevent diseases that are less common or less dangerous. They are administered based on every dog’s needs. They are still important, but you can decide when to administer them based on your dog’s health. a veterinarian will be able to examine your dog and advise you as to what non-core vaccines they need. Some non-core vaccines are the ones for canine parainfluenza, Leptospira, canine influenza viruses, Borrelia burgdorferi, and more.

Some businesses require that your dog has some non-core vaccines. For example, daycares require vaccines for influenza and Leptospira. In certain cases, you need to have your dog vaccinated for traveling, as some states require proof that your dog has taken some non-core vaccines.

It’s important to not get intimidated by the list of possible vaccines. Consult with your veterinarian and only give your dogs the vaccines they need based on their own health experience and other needs.
