What You Need To Know About Black And Red Vomit In Dogs

If your dog's vomit contains black and dark red colors, it could signify that they are bleeding internally and require immediate medical attention.

Black vomit is the most troubling and signifies a dog's digestive tract is bleeding. Bleeding in the digestive tract is commonly caused by stomach ulcers. Symptoms of the disease may also include decreased appetite, fever, drooling, and anemia.

There are different causes of stomach ulcers in dogs. However, the most common ones are Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Cancer, and Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Dogs may also develop stomach ulcers by participating in high-intensity performance sports.

Stomach ulcers in dogs are often treatable. Your veterinarian would formulate a treatment plan based on what caused the disease. Treatments usually last between several weeks to a month.

If your dog's vomit contains small amounts of bright red liquid, it is likely some small blood vessel in their esophagus or at the back of their throat is ruptured. This happens because vomiting can be traumatic to the tissues and is usually not a cause for concern if it happens once or twice. However, if it is regular or the amount of blood is much, there is a need to seek medical attention.
