Dogs can often enjoy eating grass, which can be a little worrying for their owners. Is it just for fun? Is there a deeper problem? Luckily, eating grass doesn’t harm a dog. There is no definitive reason for the behavior, but there are many possible causes.
Here’s what you need to know:
Nutritional Deficiency
Some domestic dogs eat grass if they lack the necessary dietary nutrients. Some dog food brands use cheap filler products that are difficult to digest, or that aren’t nutritionally balanced.
Stomach Discomfort
A dog may eat grass in order to trigger vomiting in themselves. This is done if they are dealing with digestion issues or stomach pain. It’s not the most common reason dogs munch on grass, but if yours is eating grass several times a day for multiple days in a row, speak to your vet.
Thirst
If a dog is dehydrated, they will find any way to quench that thirst. If you haven’t left clean, fresh water out for them, they may turn to healthy, well-watered grass to sate the craving.
Variety
Some dogs may get bored with their everyday meals, leading them to decide to eat grass to satisfy boredom. The texture and taste may be a welcome change from repetitive food. Try including some dog-safe vegetables as treats to your dog’s meal plan!
