Why do some dogs sleep more in the winter months? Let us explore four reasons that could explain the extended sleep pattern during winter, and what can be done to regulate it.
1. Cold Weather
Similar to bears that hibernate in winter, some dogs who live in areas known for distinct and extreme cold weather tend to sleep longer than their counterparts who live in warmer places. Turning up the heater in your home, as well as providing your dog with a thick blanket or sweater can better regulate his sleeping patterns.
2. Low Light
Low light conditions over an extended period can lull dogs to sleep and keep them asleep for longer durations in the winter months. Installing brighter lights around the home and leaving them on can help keep your dog alert and awake for a while longer.
3. Hormones
Melatonin and serotonin are hormones that regulate your dog’s sleep patterns and mood, respectively. The dark winter months cause an increase in the production of melatonin, which results in sleepier canines, and a decrease in the production of serotonin, which results in exhausted and lethargic dogs. Boosting light exposure can help regulate hormone levels for a more balanced mood and sleep.
4. Medical Issues
Some dogs experience boredom and depression, which causes them to be less active and sleep more. Keep dogs occupied by playing with them and taking them for a walk.
