Why Is My New Dog Not Eating?

Fussy eaters are no news to us. They come in all shapes and sizes, whether human or animal. Sometimes a dog rejects his food because, in his lofty opinion, it simply doesn’t make the grade he was hoping for.

Occasionally, there could be an underlying reason for this. If your new dog refuses to eat or hardly eats enough to survive, there are a few points to take into consideration

  • Could it be fear that’s preventing him from eating? Sometimes a new dog is timid as he is still getting used to his new surroundings and will need to really feel at home before he plucks up the courage to help himself to his food. His place in the pet hierarchy could also be an issue if there is another dog that’s already part of the family.
  • Check your new dog’s health. If, for instance, he has a tooth or gum problem, this could cause pain and discourage him from eating.
  • Chop and change his meals a few times until you can establish what he seems to prefer. This could save a lot of time and trouble in the future.
  • Try and avoid giving him snacks in between meals as this might be causing him to feel satisfied for longer.

Most importantly, shower your new canine companion with love and coax him gently into trying new foods. As soon as he feels comfortable, he will most likely relax and before you know it, he may even come back for seconds!
