It was a day off for Dani McKissick in Houston, Texas, when she suddenly felt an extremely strong, striking feeling – akin to a punch of a gut. This gut feeling was telling her only one thing: she needed to help an animal in need.
So, McKissick made a detour from her errands and wound up at the Harris County Animal Shelter. She wasn’t sure why she went there, as she had a pup at home and two cats, and it was 45 minutes drive that she wasn’t familiar with, so much so that she almost turned back.
But she was determined to volunteer or donate, not to adopt – so she told her sister to stop her from adopting at all costs!
When she arrived at the shelter, she wandered aimlessly around. That’s when a staff member told her about a chow mix pup named Honey, who was 9 years old and was scheduled to be euthanized in a few hours. So McKissick went to see Honey, and those sad, soft eyes won her over.
McKissick decided to foster Honey. This would prove to be tricky, as Honey has a respiratory infection, very bad allergies, and lots of health problems. But McKissick was determined to help her, so she brought her home. After just 24 hours, she was smitten, and she had to adopt the pup.
It has been a week and a few vet visits since Honey first arrived, but she’s settling in wonderfully and is now best friends with all the other animals in the home! It’s like she was the missing piece that McKissick and her four-legged friends needed.
McKissick is sure glad that she trusted her gut feeling and was able to save the life of such a wonderful dog.
