Cats and dogs will eat plants. That should not come as a surprise to you if you already have a pet or two living in your home. Having some houseplants is something many people take pride in.
But, if you have both houseplants and pets – you need to be careful! Eating the wrong plant can cause serious illness. The houseplants that are the most toxic to both cats and dogs are sago palms and all varieties of lily. Dr. Tina Wismer, DVM, the medical director of Animal Poison Control Center for the ASPCA says that any and all houseplants have the potential for causing harm to your cat or dog.
Some plants may result in gastrointestinal upset and vomiting. Dr. Wismer suggests that all houseplants be out of reach, so you don’t end up in the veterinary ER. Some less toxic plants that you can decorate your home with include peperomia, Norfolk pines, velvet plants, and succulents. The safest plants are orchids, African violets, bromeliads, the Christmas cactus, and spider plants.
If you think that your pet has eaten a plant and is sick, do not hesitate! Call poison control for help. The best thing to do is write down the number and put it somewhere so you can find it easily – just in case. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center Phone Number is (888) 426-4435. You want a happy and healthy home, so be sure to not leave your pet unattended for too long! They will find trouble in a heartbeat!
